'Give Gwadar The Right': Demand For Free Movement In The Sea And Supply Of Electricity And Water!
A large public meeting was
held in the coastal city of Gwadar in Balochistan on Thursday under the theme
'Give Gwadar the Right' in which security forces in Gwadar were eliminated from unnecessary check posts and local
fishermen were allowed to move freely in the sea.Eleven demands were made,
including permission to stop poaching and water supply.
Thousands of people including
fishermen, laborers, social and political activists participated in the rally
held at Shuhada Jivani Chowk in the center of Gwadar city.
The meeting was chaired by Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman, General Secretary, Jamaat-e-Islami
Balochistan, Gwadar.He
said that if the demands were not resolved within a month, they would hold a
big sit-in in Gwadar in November and block the administrative mission.
Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman said that after leaving home, the locals of Gwadar have to
answer the question 'who are you, where are you coming from and where are you
going'.Five times a day we have to prove ourselves as Pakistanis. He said that
Gwadar port did not give anything to the people of Gwadar. If there is
humiliating development in the name of security, then we do not accept it.
Hidayat-ur-Rehman Baloch said
that the real owners of Gwadar are the fishermen of Gwadar and the locals.Sitting
in Islamabad, it is said that Gwadar is developing. What kind of development is
it that the people are getting water and not electricity, education and
employment, by allowing illegal fishing trawlers in the sea, Gwadar's economy. It
has been destroyed and the local fishermen are in need of bread.
He said that the fishermen
have to check the data, enter, take tokens before going to sea, it will not
work now and they will have to be given freedom to go to sea.
He said that a Chinese
company working at Gwadar port provides jobs and good salaries to non-natives
as compared to the youth of Gwadar.A non-native is paid Rs 50,000 while a Gwadar
resident is paid Rs 18,000.The first right to jobs here belongs to the local
people and the people of the province.
Political observers and
journalists have described the rally, titled "Give Gwadar the Right",
as the largest and unconventional gathering in the city's history.
Noor Mohsin, vice-president of Gwadar Press Club, said that this was the
largest gathering in the history of Gwadar. In a sparsely populated city like
Gwadar, thousands of people have been forced to take to the streets because
they are angry with the treatment they have received and their people are
ignoring basic and serious issues.
According to Noor Mohsin, a
large number of people from Gwadar attended the rally in an unconventional
manner at the request of the leader of a party that had historically had little
public support in Balochistan.Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman, from a non-political
and fishing family, has been welcomed for speaking out on public issues in an
atmosphere of fear.
Gwadar-based researcher and writer Nasir Rahim Sohrabi tweeted, “If public opinion and acceptance is considered a measure
of success or failure of decisions, policies and initiatives, then this
gathering on Thursday, September 30 in Gwadar district has been held for many
years. There are vetoes against many policies, decisions and actions.
